Longevity of resin composite restorations

Background

New dental materials, operative techniques, and treatment strategies have been developed for the treatment and restoration of compromised permanent dentition. Methods

All of the posterior RC restorations placed in PDHS clinics in Copenhagen and Frederiksberg, Denmark, between November 1998 and December 2002 were included. Follow-up lasted up to 8 years. The endpoint of each restoration—repair or replacement—was noted, and the individual contributions of various cofactors to the outcome were assessed.

Results

Overall, 2881 children and adolescents and 4355 restorations were included in the follow-up, with the mean age of participants being 13.7 years at baseline. Most (78%) of the restorations were placed in those aged 12 to 19 years. The majority of the restorations (3507) were placed in molars, with 848 in premolars. A total of 2216 were placed in the upper jaw and 2139 in the lower jaw. Forty-nine percent were class I restorations and 41.7% class II.

Discussion

Resin restorations placed in children and adolescents through PDHS clinics in Denmark had acceptable longevity. The data were comparable to those found for adults.

Clinical Significance

The complications accompanying the use of RC restorations in these children and adolescents were comparable to those found in studies of adult patients.
