The abnormal activation of the immune system that characterizes autoimmune diseases produces inflammation and tissue damage. Sjögren syndrome (SS) is the second most common autoimmune disorder but carries special significance for oral health care. Characteristics of SS include diminished salivary and lacrimal gland function. SS can accompany other autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and skin and mucosal tissue damage. As a result, patients can suffer microbial shifts in the oral cavity so
The 151 adults (mean age 65.8 years) self-reported having SS. Ninety-six percent of the sample were women; just 3.3% were smokers. All participants completed a survey seeking information on their basic demographics, current medical conditions, medications (prescription and over-the-counter) used, and oral products used to manage their SS symptoms.
Based on their reports, the subjects were divided into two groups by medication use (fewer than four drugs used and four or more drugs taken) and comorbid conditions (fewer than four and four or more). Nearly 75% of the participants used daily prescription medications. The most common ones were antihypertensive agents, then pain relievers, antidepressants, anti-inflammatory agents, gastroesophageal acid reflux agents, and cholesterol-lowering medications. Patients who report having symptoms of SS, take four or more medications, and have four or more comorbid conditions are likely to have substantial oral symptoms. Dentists should be aware of all the medications—prescription and over-the-counter—their patients are taking and of the comorbid conditions they have so they can provide safe, effective treatment that does not provoke more severe or additional symptoms.
