Background

Early childhood caries (ECC) refers to the presence of one or more decayed, missing due to caries, or filled tooth surfaces in a primary tooth in a child age 71 months or younger. ECC that results from dietary sugars, poor oral hygiene, poor parental education, adverse socioeconomic conditions, low family income, having a single parent, and regular medication effects is a global health problem, Some ethnic and cultural variables also predispose children to ECC related to feeding habits. In the

Methods

The PubMed, Embase, Scopus, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Ichushi-web, Biblioteca Virtual em Saude, and Biblioteca Virtual en Salud Espana databases were searched for publications about the use of SDF for children’s carious lesions. Nineteen publications were identified, including 16 clinical trials involving primary teeth and 3 involving permanent teeth.

Results

Based on 14 studies, compared with a negative control or placebo, the use of 38% SDF solution was effective in arresting dentin caries in primary teeth. Three studies used 30% SDF solution and found it was more effective than 5% sodium fluoride varnish. A 12% SDF solution was ineffective in arresting caries in primary teeth in one study. Ten percent solutions were effective in one study but ineffective in another. Two studies of using a 38% SDF solution in permanent teeth found no significant

Discussion

Various concentrations of SDF were used and the results varied as well. A high concentration, 38% SDF, appears effective in arresting caries in children. More investigations are needed to develop evidence-based guidelines for SDF use.

Clinical Significance

ECC is a significant problem among children all over the world. Often the means to treat these children are unavailable to them or cannot be accessed because of a multitude of socioeconomic and patient-related factors. Using a 38% SDF solution
